African women are steadily working towards eradicating media representations of them as a disadvantaged gender. The need to change this perception of African women formed the premise of the ‘Women4Africa’ organisation. Founded 20 years ago, Women4Africa is an organisation that works to empower and enlighten African women across the world. In doing so, they help to demonstrate the positive changes brought on by these hardworking women. Through their annual award ceremony, they celebrate, encourage and motivate women to work towards success. GUBA speaks to Women4Africa, to uncover their plans for the next generation of African women.

Tell us a bit about Women 4 Africa

Women4Africa is a vision for Africa and its Amazing Women. We are an organisation focused on celebrating and empowering Africa and its women by supporting and celebrating their role within their communities. We do so by holding conferences and award ceremonies.

We have our annual May awards where we celebrate the best of African Women. This Year’s award will take place on the 18th May 2013. We hold a conference in November where great African women get a chance to interact, advice and motivate each other as well as the next generation.

Women4Africa also gives to Africa through its Young Africa Writers project (YAW). The YAW project looks out for disadvantaged children in Africa and empowers their creative skills by awarding them with small financial bursaries. In 2012 we supported a small school in Ghana, West Africa

What can be expected from W4A awards 2013?

The Women 4 Africa Awards 2013 will be an exhilarating and informative event. It will be a gathering of hardworking Africans from the UK and around the world time. With up to 1,000 attendees, there will be entertainment from Dele Sosimi (the Late Fela Anikulapo –Kuti’s Pianist), as well as comedy by Funmbi. A children’s fashion show will also be held by Issosey. There will be superb networking opportunities and inspiring speeches all covered by international and local Press.

What do you think needs to be done to improve the lives of women in Africa?

That is a very big question. I think one of the immediate things that need to happen is for society to accept that women have equal responsibilities, leadership qualities and value as men. Quite often, women’s voices are ignored by society and this makes equality quite difficult to achieve. I think if we can solve this issue, we would be on our way to building a more stable society.

What do you think about the GUBA awards?

The GUBA Awards is a great initiative. It is very necessary because GUBA acts as an Ambassador for people with limited knowledge of Ghana. It helps to educate and connect Ghanaians and Africans around the world. I hope that it keeps getting better every year.

How can people get involved with W4A projects?

To get Involved in W4A projects, please email info@women4africa.com or call 0203 3726527. You can also visit: www.women4africa.com and express your Interest in adding value to African women through the Women4Africa platform.

Empowerment is key to growth within our communities and GUBA is in support of the marvellous work been done by Women4Africa. We would urge all our readers to support the projects being run by Women4Africa and to attend their upcoming awards show.

The Women4Africa event will take place on Saturday 18th May 2013 at ‘The Great Hall, Kensington Town Hall, Hornton Street, W8 7NX. Ceremony will run from 7-10pm and tickets cost £35.

Music brings the world together, transcends borders and unifies people. No one knows the power of music more than Mr Vandyck Appiah Kobi. As the brainchild behind Hot Digital online radio, he sought to bring together the Ghanaian community in the UK with his radio show.

He has since succeeded, amassing a large number of listeners. Hot Digital radio has been entertaining the Ghanaian community for 12 years and continues to unify the African community around the world. Running a radio station isn’t easy but he has demonstrated the price of determination and we at GUBA interview him to find out the workings of Hot Digital online radio.

What motivated you to start Hot Digital radio station?

I was an engineering supervisor for WBLS radio for 8 years and with that experience, I set myself a task to open another radio station for the Ghanaian community. I was motivated by the growing number of Ghanaians in the UK and made it my duty to use Hot digital as the platform for entertainment, news and education.

What challenges have you had along the way?

One of the main challenges I had in the beginning was to do with licensing. It was difficult operating for 5 to 6 years without a license however, the introduction of internet radio made it easier for me to reach Ghanaians all over the world. Also, people were hostile at the start but with knowledge, support from some members in my community and the grace of God, I was able to succeed. I would like to add that my late wife played a very important part in my career, giving me support and encouragement along the way.

Please introduce your team.

I started with Danny Owusu who hosted the news and gospel show. Other team members include: Baby Boy, DJ Fire, Opanin Marfo, DJ Skoobi, DJ Alordia, Maame Akua and Osofo Mafia (DJ Adusei) who played a great part. We also had DJs: Fifii Pratt, Giles Bossman and DJ Zik, from Ghana who provided us with immense support.

What have you got planned for Hot Digital’s 12 year anniversary?

To commemorate our 12 year anniversary, we will be hosting an Anniversary and Fundraising Dance at the River of Life Centre on the 5th of May 2013. We would like to invite everyone to come and celebrate this achievement with us. We hope that this event brings together Ghanaians and Africans from all walks of life.

What do you expect to see for the next 12 years of Hot digital radio?

The aim for Hot Digital in light of our 12 year celebration is to get everything in order for 2014. This will help us to reach a wide range of people and make it easier for listeners to access our shows. We hope that in the coming years, we are able to motivate and educate the Youth.

Do you have any plans in place to provide work experience for the youth?

In the upcoming years, we will like to give the youth an opportunity to experience the workings of a radio station. They will get a chance to try their hands at being DJs, Presenting and many more.

What do you think of the GUBA awards?

The GUBA awards is a great way of showing appreciation to the hardworking people within the Ghanaian community. The charity work being done by the GUBA Foundation is very motivating and I am very proud of GUBA for its continued service to the Ghanaian community.

What advice will you give to people hoping to pursue a career in radio?

Pursuing a career in radio is very rewarding. You get to entertain and impact the lives of your listeners. I would advise that you put your all into it and be dedicated to your craft for hard work pays.

It is said that through adversity we develop an inner strength and draw closer to our purpose. Through a trying time in his life, Isaac Frempong’s faith was strengthened; he has since gone on to be a Minister of the word of God and in doing so, has enriched the lives of others. Recognizing his calling from a young age, Isaac has been dedicated to spreading the Gospel of God through music. His love for singing coupled with his strong relationship with God, has led to him releasing his debut album ‘Praise Through’. The aim of the album is to motivate and encourage people to seek the help of God through trials. The single ‘He Reigns’ from the upcoming album is available to purchase on ITunes. GUBA shines the spotlight on Isaac Frempong in this interview, as we find out what he has in store with his upcoming album and the impact God has had on his life.

What inspired you to go into music ministry?

I always had music around me when I was growing up and during Secondary School in Accra, I led the Prefects Choir. This experience was to become my first of performing in front of a crowd. I soon realised I had a heavenly call for Music Ministry to which I responded to by joining my church choir, singing lead vocals and performing solo ministrations. My love for music continued to increase and I learnt how to play various musical instruments. I am currently the Choir Leader and Praise and Worship Minister.

Tell us a bit about your upcoming album.

My upcoming album is a Holy Spirit inspired collection of songs. The album, ‘Praise Through’ was birthed at a very challenging period in my life. My wife and I had to earnestly seek the face of God to see us through a difficult situation. We learnt to praise through our adversity, struggles and trials in order to overcome every obstacle of the enemy. The lying enemy came to steal, kill and to destroy but, as we were armed with Praise and Worship, he failed! It is an inspirational and motivational album to encourage those who feel dejected by the many challenges of life.

What do you hope your listeners gain from listening to your songs?

My album is one that I strongly believe and hope will touch and change the lives of many. I hope that it will renew and refresh the minds of many. I want this album to elevate people to new spiritual heights.

What other projects are you currently involved in?

I am currently focusing on promoting the new album and writing some more songs. I do have a Charity called Children of Potentials (COP). COP is a non for profit organisation that believes that children possess phenomenal potentials and abilities which should not be lost due to poverty but instead, cultivated and nurtured through support. We provide educational, health materials and financial support for children and young people. We also support parents of disadvantaged children by helping them to start small business enterprises. It is a fantastic organisation that is trying to make a difference. I am also coming up with a new fashion line which will help fund the charity.

What advice will you give to others about overcoming adversity?

I would have to say that the grace of God is the answer to overcoming adversity. We have to possess the knowledge that Jesus died for us so that we can be free from the law. We have to leave guilt and shame behind and focus on the redeeming power of the blood of Jesus Christ. Life is full of challenges however, if we make God our focus and magnify God and not the problem, we shall overcome every adversity.

The album ‘Praise Through’ will be out on the 17th of August 2013. We hope that this album motivates and strengthens the faith of many. We would also encourage people to show support for the Children of Potentials charity.

You are never too young to follow your dreams and it seems Portia Oti has demonstrated this tremendously well. Dancing since the age of 4, 11 year old Portia holds the coveted title as the England under 12 Hip-Hop Dance Champion (2012) as well as, the European under 12 Hip-Hop Champion (2012). Portia’s dancing skills ranges from hip-hop, ballet and even to the new dance phenomenon ‘azonto’. This talented young girl has featured in a number of competitions, theatre productions and national commercials. Portia’s dedication warranted her nomination for the GUBA Rising Star award in 2012, where she competed against other talented nominees twice her age. Performing in front of dignitaries like the Duke of Edinburgh, she has shown that there are no limits to her talents and aspirations. We have been impressed by Portia’s achievements sofar and in this interview, we give her the platform to express herself.

What do you love about dancing?

I like to dance because I find it fun. I enjoy being creative and being able to express how I feel. I find it difficult to express myself sometimes but when I am dancing, I feel like I can be who and what the music requires me to be. Dancing allows me to meet new people and make new friends from all over the world. As a result, I have two families, my blood family and my dance family and I love that sense of belonging. I also love the fashion that comes with dancing such as, trainers and sweats.

How do you prepare for your competitions?

When I have a competition coming up, I prepare by spending some time listening to some of the new songs that have been released. I also practise some combinations to beats of 8 to help me prepare as we are not told beforehand the music we will be dancing to. My mum usually washes my hair and packs my clothes and trainers for me. The competitions usually run the whole day and start very early. I compete in a number of events so I usually have to take a few outfits with me.

How does it feel to be a semi- finalist for ‘Got to Dance’?

Got to Dance was a great experience for me and a brilliant platform because, it has opened doors for me that I could have only dreamed of prior to the show. The film team was great and I was so proud that I was able to show the UK what I enjoy doing. It was great meeting all the judges and Davina, the whole experience was magical and I felt like a little star! Getting the 3 Gold stars was all I wanted so when I saw the 3 stars light up, I felt like my heart jumped out of my chest, I was so happy that I just cried. I wanted to show my mum and family that all their support was worthwhile and that I will continue to work hard.

Do you have any competitions or performances coming up?

I have a number of different shows and competitions coming up. I am due to go and defend my title in Amsterdam at the IDO Hip Hop European Championship in June. I am due to take part in a number of shows and a summer theatre performance which was organised by Boy Blue Ent (Kenrick Sandy) and ZooNation (Kate Prince), both Olivier Award winning dance companies. Presently, I am rehearsing and training for all the events I am fortunate to be involved in.

You performed at the Commonwealth evening for Prince Charles and Prince Philip. How was that experience for you?

Zoe Jackson from Living The Dream Dance Co. asked me to join them to perform at the Queens Commonwealth Celebrations. This was truly a dream come true and I loved every single minute. The feeling was a bit out of this world almost like I was floating as I couldn’t believe how beautiful the Abbey was, and that I was dancing in front of such highly acclaimed individuals.

Do you find it easy combining your school work with competition and training?

My school is very supportive of my performing and if I have to miss school they always provide me with the work I have missed out on and any extra support I may need on my return. School for me can be challenging at times because of my dyslexia, but with my mum and sister I am doing very well and will continue to focus on my education.

You have done very well so far. What advice will you give to special children like you who are dyslexic, have sickle cell or autism?

Thank you. I have a good family who help me with everything. I would advise any child who may have some extra needs, to not allow yourselves to be labelled and roped in by the definitions of your condition. You can and you will!! Persevere in all that you choose to do, don’t accept ‘No’ as an answer and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to be actively performing in shows, theatre and TV. I would also like to open and run my own dance school. I would want a part of the dance school to focus on children and adults with special needs. I am also very interested in getting into choreography for shows, music videos and more.

Is there anything interesting you want the world to know about Portia Oti?

I believe in hard work and I will never let anything hold me back. I try my best to push through the barriers in front of me and I am enjoying what I am doing. I am also launching a clothing range very soon known as HipHopKidz, the first range HipHopGirlz will be out soon, focusing on street/hip-hop/dance attire for young girls

Portia Oti has such exceptional talent. Her commitment to her craft is opening many doors for her. We wish Portia all the best in her upcoming competitions and performances. We would like to encourage people to continue to support her and to support her new clothing line which will be launched soon.

Nana Churcher’s mantra is “You will win if you don’t quit” and the success of her show and life is a testimony of this.‘The Nana Churcher Show’ gives a unique look and insight into the lives of extraordinary personalities within the Afro-Caribbean community. Interviewing the likes of Politicians to musicians, this weekly show has grown tremendously in numbers and is establishing Nana Churcher as a household name in talk shows. Alongside her show, she works as a Beauty Consultant/ Sales Director at Mary Kay Cosmetics, as well as a devoted mother and wife. In a role reversal, GUBA puts Nana Churcher in the hot seat as we find out what makes her tick in this insightful interview.

How did ‘The Nana Churcher Show’ come about?

‘The Nana Churcher Show’ which is a chat show, is a childhood dream of mine that has come true. Ever since I was a little girl I have always wanted my own talk show. I used to watch the Oprah Winfrey Show and I admired her work and persistence, which further strengthened my desire to have my own show. I love getting to know people and getting an insight into their life. From the discussions I have with people, I end up receiving valuable information which I share in hope that it can impact the lives of others. The only difference now is that I get to bring a recorder along with me. Nana Churcher is my name so the show is named after me.

What has been your most interesting interview to date?

The most interesting one will have to be the interview with Jermaine Lawlor. As a former gang member, Jermaine has turned his life around and is currently a motivational speaker and Evangelist. He works with young people within his community to try and motivate them to work hard and stay off the streets. His interview is available via: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvBqYSGQvS0&playnext=1&list=PLPoQTQyALibn3FUMT0o2WDkw4g0dp6G44 )

What is your motivation?

I am motivated by my four beautiful children. My husband and I work hard in order to be able to provide the best for them. The bible also says a wise man leaves an inheritance for his children and that pushes me to do what I do.

What do you have in store for your viewers in Season Two of the show?

Season Two is going to be thrilling, energising and phenomenal. I travel outside the UK for some riveting, enlightening and in-depth conversations with celebrities, politicians and real life families. You would not want to miss out on Season Two, It will be exciting!

In the next couple of years, I hope the Nana Churcher Show will be….

In the next couple of years I hope The Nana Churcher Show will be a show that everyone is talking about. I hope it becomes a show that people can’t wait to watch because it uplifts and encourages them to be part of a positive society and to also give back to mankind. I believe each and every one of us has greatness within us but, some have to hear it from other sources and I hope that they get that message from my show.

What do you think about the GUBA Awards and the newly formed GUBA Foundation?

I would like to give a huge applause to GUBA Awards because Dentaa and the GUBA team have done extraordinarily well. I know it is not easy to put up such an event and it is my prayer that they always get the support they need. The GUBA Foundation is a wise thing to do; there is nothing more fulfilling than giving back to the community especially the way the GUBA Foundation is raising awareness about autism. I am a great fan of GUBA as a result of this and wish them many more successful years to come.

What advice do you have for those who want to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?

I would say go for it but for the right reasons. The entertainment industry is tough, but like other industries you have to love what you do. Always remember success doesn’t happen overnight so, work hard and have fun whilst doing so. It is important to network with the right people and to never be afraid to ask and learn. Let integrity and respect be part of you and always have a great attitude, and beyond the sky will be your limit. I always end by saying ‘ you will win if you don’t quit’.

Season Two of the Nana Churcher show is a 13 episode show available now on VOX Africa TV (Sky 218) on Sundays at 6:30 pm. We love The Nana Churcher show here at GUBA and we would encourage everyone to tune in to this exciting and entertaining show.<ins cite="mailto:Vijay" datetime="2013-04-10T18:00"></ins>

Several Ghanaian and Multinational organizations have confirmed their participation, there are however a few opportunities for interested organizations to still register to participate, for further information please get in touch with the contacts below.
